The Planning and Economic Development Division is responsible for the administration of community development grant programs and economic development planning. When a community applies for a grant to fund construction, the division checks its maps of flood prone areas. When checking the maps, the division assesses the impact the project might have on water resources and whether or not it is in an area that is prone to flooding. This series consists of maps of flood prone areas throughout Ala. that the Planning and Economic Development Division used when assessing applications for funding. The majority of the maps were created by the U.S. Geological Survey with the Federal Insurance Administration. The rest of the maps were prepared by a private firm of engineers and geologists for the Birmingham Regional Planning Commission. The series is basically composed of U.S. Geological Survey maps. Each map serves as a base map on which flood prone areas have been highlighted. Also with the series is an index map of the series which gives the names and numbers assigned to the maps.
